Cyberpunk 2077 just landed on Xbox Game Pass on March 10, 2026 — and the timing couldn’t be better. You’re not downloading the broken, crash-prone mess that launched in December 2020. You’re getting one of the most complete open-world RPGs ever made, updated and polished across more than five years of post-launch work. If you’ve been on the fence, the fact that it’s now included with your Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or Premium subscription removes the last excuse not to try it.
Before you boot up Night City for the first time, here are eight things every new player needs to know.
1. This Is Not the Cyberpunk 2077 From 2020
When Cyberpunk 2077 launched on December 10, 2020, it was one of gaming’s most infamous disasters. The console version was riddled with bugs, the AI was broken, the wanted system was a joke, and the game was actually removed from the PlayStation Store for months. It became shorthand for overhyped, underdelivered releases.
That game no longer exists.
CD Projekt Red spent years rebuilding it. Update 1.5 (February 2022) was a comprehensive overhaul of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions. Update 2.0 (September 2023) was the real transformation — the entire skill tree was redesigned from scratch, the police and wanted system was completely rebuilt, the cyberware system was reworked, and driving was significantly improved. Then Update 2.3 (July 16, 2025) added AutoDrive for vehicles, new cars, on-demand Delamain cabs, and Mac support, proving the team hasn’t stopped.
The redemption arc is real. Cyberpunk 2077 is now widely considered one of the best open-world RPGs available anywhere. You’re getting it at peak form.
2. Your Lifepath Choice Sets the Tone — Choose the Fantasy You Want
Character creation asks you to choose one of three Lifepaths before the game begins, each with its own ~30-45 minute prologue that establishes your character’s backstory.
- Street Kid — You grew up in Night City’s Heywood district and know the streets. Best for players who want to feel like a local from the start.
- Nomad — You’re an outsider coming to the city from the Badlands. Great for players who want to experience Night City fresh, and it makes the open-world areas outside the city feel more meaningful.
- Corpo — You worked for the mega-corporation Arasaka. Unlocks a uniquely cynical corporate perspective on the world, with dialogue options that lean into the game’s themes about corporate power.
Here’s the honest take: Lifepath has real flavor in the opening sequence and sprinkles unique dialogue throughout the game, but it doesn’t lock you out of any major missions, companions, or endings. All three paths access everything. Choose based on which backstory sounds interesting to you — there’s no “wrong” pick.
For first-time players, Nomad is a popular choice because the fish-out-of-water perspective mirrors your own. Corpo fans who love lore about corporate dystopia tend to find that path especially satisfying.
3. Don’t Spread Your Attribute Points — Specialize From the Start
Cyberpunk 2077 has five core attributes: Body, Reflexes, Technical Ability, Intelligence, and Cool. These feed into completely different playstyles, and Update 2.0 made the perk trees deep and rewarding enough that specialization actually matters now.
The three main archetypes are:
- Netrunner (Intelligence + Cool) — You hack enemies and their cyberware remotely, often without firing a shot. Beginner-friendly because you stay out of direct firefights.
- Solo (Body + Reflexes) — Guns, explosives, and brute force. The most straightforward approach.
- Street Samurai (Reflexes + Cool) — Blades and stealth. Extremely powerful and visually satisfying.
The critical tip: you can only fully respec your attributes once in the entire game, using a rare item. Once you commit to a build direction early and invest consistently, your character becomes genuinely powerful. Spreading points evenly across all five attributes means you’re mediocre at everything and excellent at nothing — not fun when the game rewards specialists.
Pick two attributes and lean in. You can always explore other builds on a second playthrough.
4. The Main Story Is About 25 Hours — But Don’t Rush It
The main campaign will take most players around 25 hours if they’re focused, with a completionist run easily pushing past 100 hours. Night City has six distinct districts — Watson, Westbrook, City Center, Heywood, Pacifica, and Santo Domingo — plus the Badlands outside, and each one rewards exploration.
Here’s the important part: the companion storylines are the best content in the game. Panam Palmer, Judy Alvarez, Kerry Eurodyne, and River Ward each have 4-6 hour personal story arcs that are as compelling as most full game campaigns. These aren’t optional filler — they’re the reason people replay Cyberpunk 2077.
There’s also a practical reason to pace yourself: several of the game’s best endings require completing specific companion quests before the final mission. Rush to the end, and those options disappear. Take your time with the side content and you’ll unlock endings that hit much harder emotionally.
One more tip: NPCs will leave holocalls on your phone as the story progresses. These can expire if you advance too quickly. Check your messages regularly.
5. Phantom Liberty Is Not Included With Game Pass — But It’s Worth Buying
This is the most important thing to clarify upfront: Phantom Liberty, the expansion DLC, is not included with Xbox Game Pass. What you’re getting through Game Pass (Ultimate or Premium) is the base game only.
Phantom Liberty launched on September 26, 2023, and it’s set in Dogtown — a new locked-down district within the Pacifica area of Night City. The storyline is a spy thriller featuring Idris Elba as FIA agent Solomon Reed alongside a returning Keanu Reeves as Johnny Silverhand. It adds its own new ending to the game, distinct from all the base game endings.
It’s available separately from the Xbox Store for around $29.99. Important note: Phantom Liberty only runs on Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC — there’s no last-gen version.
Is it worth it? The overwhelming consensus is yes — it’s one of the best game expansions in years. That said, the recommendation is to finish the main game first (or at least reach level 25-30) before diving into Dogtown. It’s a natural second phase of your Night City experience. Check out our Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition if you want both the base game and Phantom Liberty in one package.
6. Xbox Series X vs. Series S — What to Expect
Both Series X and Series S deliver a great experience, but there are differences worth knowing.
Xbox Series X can run Quality Mode (4K/30fps with ray tracing) or Performance Mode (targeting 60fps at 1440p-1080p). Performance Mode is the recommendation — 60fps makes the gunplay and driving feel dramatically more responsive.
Xbox Series S caps at 1440p resolution and doesn’t support ray tracing, but targets 60fps in Performance Mode. It still looks excellent, especially considering the price point of the console. One tip: turn off motion blur in the display settings, which helps visual clarity at 1440p.
One important note: Xbox One is not supported. When Update 2.0 launched in September 2023, last-gen support was officially dropped. Cyberpunk 2077 is now a current-gen and PC exclusive. The Game Pass version requires Series X|S (or cloud streaming on supported devices).
Fast travel between Night City’s districts is near-instant on current-gen hardware, which makes exploring the different neighborhoods much more enjoyable than it was on older machines.
7. Night City Rewards Exploration — A Few Things to Watch For
Night City is largely open from the moment you finish the prologue, and the world is dense enough that wandering often leads somewhere interesting. A few things to keep an eye out for:
- Iconic Weapons — Items with orange borders are “Iconic” weapons with unique mods. Pick them up even if they’re not your current build; they can be upgraded as you level.
- NCPD Scanner Hustles — Blue icons on the map are small combat encounters scattered around the city. Fast XP and money, and many have a short story beat attached.
- Fixer Calls — As you enter new districts, local fixers call with job offers. These Gigs are 10-30 minute missions with their own narratives and are the backbone of the “mercenary freelancer” fantasy.
- AutoDrive (Added in Update 2.3) — Hold the left stick while driving toward a waypoint to activate AutoDrive and let the car navigate itself. A great way to actually see the city instead of staring at the road.
- Photo Mode — Cyberpunk 2077’s Photo Mode is exceptional. The neon lighting and dense architecture make for genuinely stunning screenshots, accessible from the pause menu.
Night City is built to reward players who slow down and look around. It’s one of the few open worlds that actually makes you want to explore rather than just fast-travel everywhere. 8. Content Warnings and Settings to Adjust Before You Start
Cyberpunk 2077 carries an ESRB Mature 17+ rating for extensive violence, strong language, sexual themes, and drug and alcohol use. This is a deliberate part of the game’s dystopian aesthetic, not gratuitous noise — but it’s worth knowing going in.
The game does include settings under Gameplay → Content to adjust nudity levels and explicit content. Worth checking before playing with anyone nearby who shouldn’t be watching.
For players sensitive to motion sickness, Cyberpunk 2077 is played entirely in first-person (except when driving). A few settings help significantly:
- Increase the FOV (Field of View) slider — higher is generally better for motion sickness
- Disable motion blur, chromatic aberration, and film grain
- Reduce or disable head bobbing
Finally: watch Cyberpunk: Edgerunners on Netflix either before or after you play. It’s a 10-episode anime set in Night City (2022, Studio Trigger) that dramatically deepens the world. There’s even a dedicated memorial quest in the game for its main character. And yes — Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 was announced as being in production on July 4, 2025, so now is a genuinely good time to get into this universe.
If you haven’t set up your subscription yet, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate gift cards are available on Amazon as an easy way to extend your membership.
Bottom Line: This Is the Best Time to Play Cyberpunk 2077
The game that became a punchline in 2020 spent five years becoming something remarkable. Update 2.0 and 2.3 transformed it from a broken promise into a fully realized vision of what CD Projekt Red intended. And now it’s sitting in your Game Pass library with no additional barrier.
Set aside a weekend, pick Nomad if you can’t decide on a Lifepath, put your attribute points into Intelligence or Reflexes, and do Panam’s side quests. Night City will take care of the rest.
Already getting value out of Game Pass? Space Marine 2 is another great option on the service if you want something to play while you wait for Cyberpunk to download.
