Subnautica 2 Is Coming to Game Pass on Day One — Everything We Know

Subnautica 2 launches as a Game Preview title with Game Pass on day one, which means you’ll be playing one of the most anticipated survival games of 2026 for free (or close to it) on Xbox and PC. No separate purchase required.

The original Subnautica is one of the best survival games ever made — not just on Game Pass, but full stop. Subnautica 2 is a proper sequel bringing something the franchise has never had: 4-player co-op. If you and your friends have been waiting for a good survival game to sink 80+ hours into together, this is the one to watch.

What Is Subnautica 2?

Subnautica 2 is an open-water survival adventure by Unknown Worlds Entertainment (published by KRAFTON), the same studio behind the original Subnautica and Below Zero. You’re a pioneer stranded on an all-new alien ocean world — not Planet 4546B from the first game, a brand new planet — and your job is to survive, explore, and uncover what’s buried in the depths.

The core loop that made Subnautica special is back: dive, scavenge, build a base, craft vehicles, encounter creatures, and piece together an ocean mystery. Unknown Worlds confirmed new biomes, new creatures, and an entirely original story. This isn’t just 4546B with a fresh coat of paint.

The game launches via Xbox Game Preview — the console equivalent of Early Access — which means it’s a work in progress at launch. That’s exactly how the original Subnautica started in 2018. It was rough early, then became one of the most polished survival games on the platform by full release.

Co-Op Is Finally Here

Both Subnautica and Below Zero were solo-only games. Players begged Unknown Worlds for multiplayer for years. Subnautica 2 answers that with optional co-op for up to 4 players.

You can still go solo — Unknown Worlds explicitly said the isolated single-player experience is fully intact and equally challenging. But if your friends have Game Pass, you can all dive in from day one. This is a big deal for a franchise that’s been resolutely solo since 2018.

How to Play It for Free (or Cheap)

  • Xbox Game Pass Ultimate / PC Game Pass / Game Pass Core — included day one, no extra cost
  • Xbox Series X|S — Game Preview via Xbox app, playable with Game Pass
  • Windows PC — Xbox app or Steam (PC Game Pass covers it)
  • Buy outright — Steam Early Access pricing not confirmed; the original Subnautica launched at ~$25 in Early Access as a reference point

If you’re already on any Xbox Game Pass tier, this costs you nothing. If you’re not, the cheapest way in is PC Game Pass — currently around $10/month and covers hundreds of other games including the original Subnautica.

Should You Play the Originals First?

You don’t have to — Subnautica 2 is set on a completely different planet with a standalone story. You won’t be lost jumping straight in.

But you’ll appreciate Subnautica 2 much more if you’ve had that moment in the original where you realize just how deep the ocean goes. That specific feeling — genuine curiosity mixed with genuine dread — is what Unknown Worlds does better than any other studio. Going in cold means missing the contrast.

The original Subnautica is on Game Pass right now. Play it first if you haven’t. Below Zero is shorter and more divisive, but it’s regularly on Steam for $5-10 if you want more before the sequel drops.

What’s Confirmed for Subnautica 2

  • New alien planet — completely separate from Planet 4546B
  • Optional 4-player co-op (solo still fully supported)
  • New biomes, creatures, tools, vehicles, and base building
  • Game Preview launch (Early Access model) — released unfinished, finished over time
  • Day-one Game Pass on Xbox Series X|S and PC

What Unknown Worlds hasn’t confirmed yet: specific biomes, exact story beats, cross-play between Xbox and PC, or the Steam Early Access price.

Release Date

The Xbox Partner Preview announcement in October 2024 said “2025.” That slipped. As of March 2026, Unknown Worlds hasn’t announced a final date — but all signs point to 2026. Wishlist it on Steam to get notified the moment it goes live: Subnautica 2 on Steam.

Is It Worth Getting Excited About?

Unknown Worlds earned a long leash. The original Subnautica launched rough and became one of the best survival games ever made. Below Zero was divisive but still good. Subnautica 2 has a bigger publisher (KRAFTON is not a small operation), confirms the most-requested feature the fanbase has ever asked for, and takes place on an entirely new world.

The floor here is “interesting thing you played for free on Game Pass.” The ceiling is another Subnautica — which is the survival game that converted people who said they didn’t like survival games.

Play the original first if you haven’t. Claim Subnautica 2 the day it drops. That’s the entire play.
